The first ever recipient of the Genesis Fellowship, Joe Hill-Gibbins, was interviewed in this month’s i-D magazine online. Topics that crop up in the interview include an outline of a typical day at the theatre, Joe’s love of Berlin and its avant-garde dramaturgy, and the role of the Genesis Foundation in opening up opportunities for emerging talent through the Genesis Directors Network.

Joe Hill-Gibbins is the first ever recipient of the Genesis Fellowship, a two-year grant that enables recipients to work closely with the Young Vic's artistic director David Lan in order to develop their craft as a theatre director.

The Beauty Queen Of Leenane established McDonagh's reputation on its premiere at the Royal Court in 1996, winning him Evening Standard and Critics' Circle awards and a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. It subsequently transferred to Broadway where it won a Tony Award for Best Play.

Current associate director Joe Hill-Gibbins is given a new role as Genesis Fellow and deputy artistic director of the Young Vic.
Joe Hill-Gibbins is to become the first Genesis Fellow at the Young Vic. Developing its long association with the Young Vic, the Genesis Foundation has awarded a grant for two years for this new position. In his new role as deputy artistic director, Joe will support David Lan in all aspects of the work of the theatre while continuing to direct. His next production will be the first major London revival of The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh this July in the Main House.

This Talkback event is an opportunity to hear the directors describe their experiences, and discuss the discoveries they made about the purpose and practice of directing.
