Press acclaim for ‘The Djinns of Eidgah’ at the Royal Court Theatre
Friday, 25 October 2013
The Djinns of Eidgah, a powerful new play developed as part of the Royal Court’s International Playwrights programme, has received a wealth of praise from the national critics. Following a reading in 2012 at the Royal Court, Abhishek Majumdar’s thought-provoking play was chosen to be presented in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs. Interweaving true stories and testimonies with Islamic storytelling, the play paints a magical portrait of a generation of radicalised youth, and a beautiful landscape lost to conflict.
The production, funded by the Genesis Foundation, runs until 9 November. To buy the few remaining tickets click here.
Since 1996 the Royal Court Theatre has travelled the world, running long-term play development projects and building relationships between playwrights, directors, actors and translators. They have now worked with hundreds of international playwrights from more than 60 countries, with the support of the Genesis Foundation and the British Council.
‘In more ways than one, a transporting experience.’
‘Politically enlightening and theatrically hypnotic’
Arts Desk 4*
‘The mixture of brute facts and Muslim stories and prayers is powerfully effective, and Richard Twyman, who has already directed The Djinns of Eidgah in Mumbai, presents a helpfully trimmed text with an ace cast.’
‘Potent, moving and politically eye-opening’
‘Abhishek Majumdar’s haunting play, receiving its UK premiere at the Royal Court, exemplifies what theatre can bring to our understanding of the most grievous conflicts in the world. We are aware that most long-running disputes are weighed down by layers of grief and tangled history. Majumdar, an Indian playwright, brings us a little closer to what it is like to live with that legacy’.
‘This is a strong example of the Royal Court’s continuing commitment to staging exacting, intelligent new work from abroad’.
‘Richard Twyman’s powerful production fields an excellent cast.’
