In practice, this meant that the six short-listed teams were commissioned to produce a full libretto by the end of 2003 and enough music (ten to fifteen minutes) fully composed and scored to give a good idea of the work.
Each team was assigned a mentor to help through the creative process in these months. In March 2004, a full complement of performers (actors to read the librettos, singers, musicians and conductors) will be gathered together with the creative teams to work through the material. The completed parts of the opera will be subjected to a full workshop process for several days.
At the end of that period a series of presentations will be given on March 13 and 14 of each project. These will be given in front of an invited audience that will consist of the panel, opera professionals and friends of Genesis and those involved in these workshops. It is from this process that the panel will decide on which projects should be commissioned fully and given a further year of work and support to bring them to completion.
