Selection Process For GOP2

1 March 2004

David LanGOP 2 was launched in October 2002. A call was put out internationally for people to put forward their own teams and proposals to the Genesis Opera project panel. The first such call, made in January 2001, had resulted in proposals from 37 nationalities. This time we have had around 200 applications for consideration with even more nationalities applying, making this a truly international event.

Artistic Director of the Young Vic and librettist, David Lan (right), joined the panel. With the help of composers, David Sawer and John Woolrich, the selection process was begun. The choices were whittled down until, by the end of July, after an intense two-day meeting of the panel in a secluded country retreat, a short list was arrived at.

As a result of this process, eight teams were interviewed about their projects in London at the end of August and after considerable debate the panel arrived at a short list of six projects.
