Sucker Punch

The Royal Court Theatre cemented its reputation as the leading new writing theatre and hotbed for new talent in the Evening Standard Theatre Awards last night (Sunday), winning in four categories, including Best Play, Most Promising Playwright, Best Design and the Editor’s Award.

Dominic Cooke, Artistic Director of the Royal Court Theatre said:

“These awards are testament to the hard work and exceptional talent of all our winners and nominees. It’s very rewarding to see so many of our writers and actors from the last year recognised.”

“Its equally exciting working with a new writer like Anya Reiss on bringing her play to the stage for the first time, nurturing the talents of a bright young actor just starting their career, like Daniel Kaluuya or producing new plays by world-class playwrights like Bruce Norris.”

“The Royal Court positions itself firmly on the cutting edge, working with extraordinary talent to create the landmark plays that define our age.”

Further praise came from Charles Spencer in The Daily Telegraph:

“Under Dominic Cooke the Royal Court has once again become a powerhouse of first-rate new writing. His decision to move away from the extreme in-yer-face theatre of recent years in favour of intelligent plays more likely to strike a chord with middle class audiences has born rich fruit, and despite the occasional dud, the theatre is on an amazing roll. Every time you arrive in Sloane Square it is with a sense of keen anticipation and only rarely these days do you feel let down by the time you emerge.”

The Royal Court won the following awards:

Best PlayClybourne Park by Bruce Norris
Most Promising Playwright – Anya Reiss for Spur of the Moment
Best Design – Miriam Buether for Sucker Punch
Editor’s Shooting Star Award – Daniel Kaluuya for Sucker Punch
