New Writing at LAMDA

Sunday, 22 October 2006

In recent years, LAMDA has gained a reputation as a source of new and innovative writing. The Academy's 'Long Project' was initially introduced by Principal, Peter James, to give students the chance to be involved with researching and creating a play, and the responsibilities that this entailed. It has, however, also become a source of critically acclaimed new work with two plays (Mark Ravenhill's Mother Clap's Molly House and Di Trevis' Remembrance of Things Past) devised and first performed at LAMDA before transferring to the National Theatre and beyond.

Recent Academy productions to stem from the 'Long Project' have included North Greenwich, by Mark Ravenhill and Black Hands / Dead Section by up-and-coming Australian playwright, Van Badham, which took left-wing terrorism in 1970s West Germany as its central theme and was awarded the Literary Award for Best Stage Drama Script, given by the Premier of Queensland, Australia.
