In February and March 2009, Elyse Dodgson, head of the International Department at the Royal Court Theatre in London presented, as a Genesis Project, a season of new plays about Germany entitled Off the Wall. The plays were performed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany and the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Two full productions of new plays were performed in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs: The Stone, by Marius von Mayenburg (a writer whose plays such as The Ugly One have had great success in the Genesis International Seasons in the past) and Over There by Mark Ravenhill (author of Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat, Pool (No Water), Shopping and Fucking), the latter a co-production with the Schaubühne, Berlin. The timely season included a series of rehearsal readings of five new plays by some of Germany’s leading playwrights.
The Stone ran from 5 - 28 February; and Over There ran from 25 February - 21 March.
