The oldest of the institutions that combined to form LAMDA dates from 1861 making it the oldest drama school in Great Britain.
Today, the Academy has a world-wide reputation for providing high quality vocational training for young actors and theatre technicians. Most cast lists in professional theatre, television and film in the UK today have several LAMDA trained actors and scarcely a year goes by without alumni being honoured at one the major film, television or theatre award ceremonies. Some recent winners from amongst LAMDA alumni include Clare Higgins (Olivier Awards 2005), Donald Sutherland (Golden Globe Awards, 2003), Jim Broadbent (Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA, 2002) and John Lithgow (Tony Awards, 2002).
In June 2004, LAMDA was selected to join the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama (CDD) as one of only three drama school affiliates, alongside the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. The CDD is an elite group of training providers in dance, drama and circus arts working in the Higher Education sector and membership confirms LAMDA's status as a leader in its field.
The Academy has also recently moved to new, larger premises on the Talgarth Road in West London. The move has provided LAMDA with much needed extra teaching space and a second performance space in the LAMDA Linbury Studio. The new campus also provides the Academy with the opportunity to develop and expand its facilities further in order to ensure that it can fully support the needs of its excellent students.
LAMDA is still in the process of raising funds for its new home, and of making the Academy's vision of a dynamic and innovative 21st Century Drama Academy a reality.
